本書は１９５０年代から始まった海運や陸運でのコンテナ革命を描く。

現在では世界各地を様々な製品や、まだ完成品にはならない部品が行き来して最終的な消費者にたどり着くまで非常に複雑な動きをしている。今では、このサプライチェーンが当たり前のことのように私達は考えているが、これは様々なイノベーションが生み出されて可能になっている。その重要だが目立たないイノベーションの一つがコンテナという巨大な箱に荷物を詰め込んで海上や陸上を移動させるシステムである。

このコンテナが使用される前は港では冲仲仕という港湾労働者が船から荷物を降ろしたり積み込んだりしていた。彼らは一種のギルドで、その仕事の差配にはマフィアやヤクザが関わることもあった。彼らによる荷物の抜き取り、意図的な遅延、様々な労働争議によって非効率な運営が避けられないのがコンテナが登場する以前の世界であった。

コンテナ革命は、この古い世界を一変する。規格が揃えられたコンテナが一度も開けられることなく世界中を動いていく。船にはコンテナのまま巨大なクレーンによって積み込まれ、陸上ではトラックの荷台にそのままコンテナが載せられていく。コンテナで運ばれるからこそ送り手も受け手も運び手もコンテナを一単位として管理することが出来る。もしコンテナ輸送が無ければ世界の分業体制は成立しない。それほど重要なコンテナ輸送の誕生から発展、そして完成へと至る物語が本書である。

コンテナは単純な箱に見えるが、これを物流のシステムとして運用するには様々なことが必要になる。先ずはコンテナの大きさが統一される必要がある。それを効率良く運ぶコンテナ船やコンテナ船への積み下ろしをする機械も必要だ。コンテナを直接トレーラーで運ぶ仕組みも必要だ。そして全体としてコンテナを安価に効率よく運ぶ物流ネットワークをどのように構築するのかというマネージメントが必須になる。

このような数多くのイノベーションが生み出され発展し世界的な物流ネットワークが大きくなっていく。当然のことだが、コンテナ革命は突然起こったわけでもなく、計画的に起こったわけでもない。様々な人たちがそれぞれの思惑で行動していた。全体としての動きは行きつ戻りつしつつも、最終的には大きな流れとなり世界の物流は一変する。コンテナ革命により大航海と男達の肉体労働が絡みつつ作り上げてきたロマンティックな世界は消滅し、コンテナが一単位として大きなシステムに管理される物流ネットワークが誕生する。

イノベーションがどのように起き、それが多くの人を巻き込んでいきながら、最後には何をもたらすのかという視点で本書を読むと非常に興味深く読める。

本書の主人公の一人であるマルコム・パーセル・マクリーンはコンテナ革命と共に経営者として波乱万丈の生涯を送った。トラック運送から海運業に進出し、コンテナ輸送における多くの発明、数々の買収、自社の身売りまでも行い、全世界での輸送を手掛ける世界有数の海運会社を作り上げる。その会社も原油価格の予想を読み間違えることにより倒産する。その後も小さな陸海運会社を設立する等、彼は生涯、運輸業に関わった人生を送る。

もし映画にするとしたら彼のビジネスの浮き沈みは間違いなくドラマチックな面白い作品になるであろう。ある主人公が英雄的な行動を積み重ねて大成功していく。しかし栄光の日々は束の間で世の中は無情にも流れていき最終的には破綻していく。それでも主人公は希望を捨てず再び戦いに挑んでいく。

恐らくイノベーションとは多くの人を巻き込む熱病のようなものなのだろう。人々は好むと好まざるに関わらず、その渦の中に巻き込まれていく。そこでの勝者や敗者は一時的なものに過ぎず今日の勝者も明日には滅んでいく。最終的に利益を勝ち取るのは消費者というシステムの利用者になる。その結末を薄々感じながらも人々はその渦から逃れることはできない。

一つのイノベーションの歴史から我々は現在起きている、そして未来に起きるであろうイノベーションの将来像を予想することが出来るのだ。

This book depicts the container revolution in shipping and land transportation that began in the 1950s.

Today, various products and even unassembled parts travel back and forth around the world, eventually reaching the end consumer through highly complex movements. We now take this supply chain for granted, but it has become possible through various innovations. One of the crucial yet inconspicuous innovations is the system of loading goods into huge containers and moving them by sea and land.

Before the use of containers, in ports, there were harbor laborers known as “Stevedore" who unloaded and loaded cargo from ships. They operated as a kind of guild, and sometimes even had the involvement of the mafia or yakuza in the allocation of their work. The world before the advent of containers was marked by cargo pilferage by these laborers, intentional delays, and various labor disputes, making for an inefficient operation.

The container revolution completely transformed this old world. Standardized containers moved around the world without ever being opened. On ships, they were loaded with giant cranes without being opened, and on land, they were placed directly on the bed of trucks. Because everything was transported in containers, both the sender and receiver could manage them as a single unit. Without container transport, the global division of labor wouldn’t have been possible. This book tells the story of the birth, development, and culmination of container transport, highlighting its immense importance.

Containers may seem like simple boxes, but to operate them as part of a logistics system, various factors come into play. First and foremost, there needs to be standardization in the size of containers. Efficient container ships and machinery for loading and unloading containers onto these ships are also necessary. There’s also a need for a system to transport containers directly on trailers. Additionally, essential management is required to construct an overall logistics network that can transport containers cost-effectively and efficiently.

Numerous such innovations have been developed and grown, leading to the expansion of a global logistics network. It’s important to note that the container revolution didn’t happen suddenly, nor was it planned meticulously. Various individuals acted based on their own motives. While the overall movement had its ups and downs, eventually, it became a significant global trend, completely transforming the world of logistics. The romantic world that was intertwined with the great voyages and manual labor of men disappeared due to the container revolution, giving rise to a logistics network where containers are managed as a single unit within a large system.

Reading this book from the perspective of how innovation occurs, how it involves many people along the way, and what it ultimately brings is incredibly fascinating.

One of the key figures in this book, Mr. Malcolm Purcell McLean, led a tumultuous life as an entrepreneur alongside the container revolution. He transitioned from trucking to the maritime industry, contributed to numerous inventions in container transport, engaged in various acquisitions, and even sold his own company, ultimately establishing one of the world’s leading shipping companies with global transportation operations. However, due to a miscalculation in predicting oil prices, his company went bankrupt. Despite this setback, he continued to establish small land and sea transportation companies, dedicating his entire life to the transportation industry.

If this were to be made into a movie, there’s no doubt that the rise and fall of his business would make for a highly dramatic and captivating story. There wass a protagonist who, through a series of heroic actions, achieves great success. However, those glorious days are fleeting, and the world relentlessly moves forward, ultimately leading to a downfall. Nevertheless, the protagonist refuses to give up hope and courageously takes on the challenge once more.

In all likelihood, innovation is the Euphoria fever that involves many people. Whether people like it or not, they get caught up in the whirlwind of innovation. The winners and losers within this whirlwind are temporary, and today’s winners may fade away tomorrow. Ultimately, the ones who reap the benefits are the consumers, the users of the system. While people may have a vague sense of this outcome, they cannot escape from the whirlwind.

From the history of one innovation, we can envision the future of innovations that are happening now and those yet to come.
