遠く離れたところの人にも、目の前にいるかのように接することもできるでしょうし、言語の壁も消滅しているでしょう。個々人が今までよりも遥かに自由自在につながる世界がやってきます。高性能のARグラス、優秀なAI、伝送速度を担保する６Gの通信環境があれば「ミラーワールド」は瞬く間に全世界を覆っていくでしょう。未来の私達は現実の地球に住みながら、「ミラーワールド」を生きるようになっていくのでしょうか。今の私達は、かなりの時間をSNSで過ごしています。それと同じように、未来においては、現実と重なった「ミラーワールド」、つまり加工された現実の世界を生きることが普通になるでしょう。それは、スマホを使ってSNSにつながるよりも違和感のない行為になるはずです。テクノロジーの進歩は止まりません。道具はドンドン使いやすくなっていきます。今はスマホを操作しているという行為を人間がわざわざ行っている段階ですが、これが未来の世界では操作しているという意識もなく情報のやりとりが行われます。「ミラーワールド」はこのように地球上の全ての地点でのあらゆる構造や私達の行動がデータ化され、積み重なっていく世界なのです。

人類のコミュニケーションが圧倒的に拡大することは利点ではありますが、私は恐ろしい点も予想してしまいます。スマホ依存とは段違いのレベルで多くの人が「ミラーワールド」に依存するようになるでしょう。何を感じ、何を考え、何を選ぶのかという人間の基本的な行動もアルゴリズムに大きく影響を受けるようになるでしょう。例えば、レストランでメニューを選ぶ際もAIがサポートしてくれるかもしれません。お店のキャンペーン、他のお客の評判、あなたのこれまでの好み、健康状態、今日の天候、はたまたあなたの経済状況さえもAIが総合的に判断してベストの逸品を提案してくれるかもしれません。そういった判断を繰り返していくとしたら、それは本当にあなたの判断なのでしょうか、それともAIのアルゴリズムに従っているだけなのでしょうか。人間は同じ現象に遭遇しても千差万別の反応を示すのが、自然な姿です。AIのアルゴリズムはそれをある方向にまとめてしまうでしょう。「ミラーワールド」で私達は吹き抜ける風の爽快さや大地を踏みしめる心地良さを感じることができるでしょうか。

私は現在の経済状況がAIバブルだと思っています。多くの人々はAIに過度に期待しており、最終的に、そこに集まった資金の多くはは消滅する運命だと考えています。遠くない将来に現在の花形のAI関連の多くの企業が破綻したり、吸収されたりすることでしょう。ミレニアムのITバブルでも同じことが起こりました。人間は同じことを繰り返します。実際にはAIは自分で考えているわけではなく、統計的に処理された答えを用意するだけです。大量の統計データがあれば、それらしい答えを出すことができます。しかし、AIが人間の知能を超えるようなシンギュラリティは当分はやってこないでしょう。それでもAIは、人間の平均値よりは賢いように振舞うことはできるでしょう。AIが発達した「ミラーワールド」は、人類をAIを使いこなす人間とAIに従ってアルゴリズムに操作されてしまう人間に二極化してしまうのではないかと私は危惧します。AIの奴隷になった人間は自分で考える能力を失っていきます。下層階級から上昇することは現在よりも難しくなっていくでしょう。この二極化は現在の資産による二極化よりも大きく不可逆なものになるでしょう。私は「ミラーワールド」の夢のような利点よりも、この闇の部分の方が気になってしまいます。

In just 5,000 days, the internet connected people worldwide and became an indispensable part of daily life. Built on that foundation, social media emerged next; over another 5,000 days, it led to a world where many people’s relationships and behaviors are dictated by software algorithms. The author foresees that in the next 5,000 days, we will see the rise of the “Mirrorworld"—a reality where everything is interconnected with AI.

The “Mirrorworld" is an alternate version of Earth where layers of information are superimposed onto the three-dimensional world we inhabit, connecting us through AR (augmented reality) glasses and AI. As you walk down the street, information from the Mirrorworld tailored to your goal is overlaid onto the real world right before your eyes via your AR glasses. For instance, if you need directions, arrows indicating the way will appear; if you don’t know how to operate a machine, overlaid instructions will show you what to do next. Furthermore, because AI will process inputs seamlessly through voice recognition and eye tracking, human effort will be drastically reduced. Before you even consciously decide to search for something, AI might already have a recommended answer ready—and we may well find ourselves asking AI for advice on which choice to make.

We will be able to interact with people who are far away as if they were standing right in front of us, and language barriers will disappear entirely. A world is coming where individuals can connect with far greater freedom than ever before. Armed with high-performance AR glasses, advanced AI, and a 6G network to guarantee data speeds, the “Mirrorworld" will blanket the entire globe in the blink of an eye. Will our future selves end up living in the Mirrorworld while residing on the physical Earth? Today, we spend a significant amount of time on social media. In much the same way, living in a Mirrorworld overlaid onto reality—a manipulated version of the real world—will simply become second nature. It should feel even more seamless than using a smartphone to log into social media. Technology’s march forward will not stop, and our tools will only get easier to use. Right now, we are at a stage where humans still consciously make the effort to operate smartphones; in the world of the future, data will be exchanged without us even realizing we are controlling a device. In this way, the Mirrorworld is a realm where every structure and human action across every corner of the planet is converted into data and continually stacked upon itself.

While a massive expansion in human communication is certainly a benefit, I also foresee a terrifying dark side. People will become dependent on the “Mirrorworld" on a level that makes smartphone addiction look trivial. Fundamental human behaviors—what we feel, what we think, and what we choose—will come under the heavy influence of algorithms.

For instance, AI might assist you even when choosing from a restaurant menu. It could analyze a store’s promotions, reviews from other diners, your personal preferences, health status, today’s weather, and even your financial situation to suggest the single best dish for you. If you rely on AI for these choices time and again, is it truly your decision, or are you simply obeying an algorithm? It is natural for human beings to react in a thousand different ways to the exact same situation, yet AI algorithms will likely funnel those responses in a uniform direction. In a Mirrorworld, will we still be able to feel the refreshing sensation of a breeze or the simple comfort of stepping firmly on the earth?

I personally believe the current economic climate is an AI bubble. People have built up inflated expectations around AI, and I think much of the capital pouring into it is ultimately fated to vanish. In the not-too-distant future, many of today’s star AI companies will go bankrupt or be acquired. The exact same thing happened during the dot-com bubble at the turn of the millennium; humans repeat history.

In reality, AI does not think for itself—it merely generates statistically processed answers. With enough data, it can produce an answer that sounds plausible. However, a singularity where AI surpasses human intelligence will not arrive anytime soon. Even so, AI will still be able to act smarter than the average human. My fear is that a “Mirrorworld" powered by advanced AI will polarize humanity into two groups: those who master AI, and those who are manipulated by algorithms and controlled by it.

People who become slaves to AI will lose their capacity for independent thought, making it far harder to rise from the lower classes than it is today. This polarization will be far greater and more irreversible than today’s wealth gap. For me, these dark realities loom much larger than the dreamlike benefits of a “Mirrorworld."
