The Great Demographic Reversal Ageing Societies, Waning Inequality, and an Inflation Revival Charles Goodhart, Manoj Pradhan

This book is not a specialized book, but it requires a considerable knowledge of economics. Although I am far from having a thorough understanding, the conclusion is simple.

The integration of China and Eastern Europe into the global economy, which began in 1990, has reached its peak, and further supply of new labor force cannot be expected. Advanced countries and China are also experiencing aging populations, and this trend cannot be stopped. The deflationary pressure caused by the supply of labor force in China is decreasing, and inflationary pressure is coming. From now on, we will experience population decline, aging, and inflation. That is the conclusion of this book.

Due to globalization, the supply of labor force has increased, causing a decrease in annual income for existing workers in advanced countries as they lose their bargaining power with employers. However, in some cases, political power is maintained. This is the group that supported the UK’s Brexit from the EU and the Trump administration’s restrictions on immigration. Currently, workers only have a limited level of political influence. In the future, the overall number of workers will decrease, and the total labor force will decrease. As a result, workers will regain their bargaining power for labor conditions from capitalists. This will become an inflationary factor.

Japan entered the aging society earlier than the rest of the world, but it was able to reduce domestic production and increase overseas production because it had a significant supply of labor, particularly from neighboring countries like China. As a result, companies were able to expand their profits overseas even if the domestic growth rate was low. Japan also succeeded in suppressing inflation through imported goods. The “Lost 30 Years" in Japan has a strong structural aspect. While certain segments of society have been disadvantaged, overall, the Japanese economy managed to cope. However, going forward, Japan, like other countries around the world, will face a situation where previous responses are no longer feasible.

Automation through AI, the entry of labor from countries like India and Africa, and further utilization of the workforce consisting of women and elderly individuals cannot change the situation. This is because there is an absolute shortage in the quantity of labor. As a capitalist society, we are entering an era of dissatisfaction because it becomes increasingly difficult to sustain accelerated economic development.

From here on, I will provide my personal opinion. This book leads to conclusions that are not pleasant for capitalists and business owners. However, even in such circumstances, there are still ways for individual capitalists and business owners to adapt. For example, they can find opportunities for growth in India, where aging is occurring at a slower pace, or in Sub-Saharan African countries that are lagging behind. Successful business models from advanced countries may also apply in those regions. Individuals may be able to secure profits by investing in the entire country through ETFs or similar means. Additionally, the market for automation through AI and anti-aging products for the elderly holds great potential for further development.

Not every aspect of society will become difficult. It is possible that it may not be a bad era for workers. Even if the overall situation of society deteriorates, it does not mean that the individual circumstances have to be the same. Just as Japanese companies hedged their losses by expanding into emerging countries such as China during the “Lost 30 Years," it is entirely possible to hedge through different methods. It is essential to change our way of thinking.

The next 80 years of historical cycles will likely pass as the twilight of capitalism. Eventually, humanity will surpass capitalism. Capitalism will not come to an immediate end, but its golden age has already concluded. Within this twilight, humanity will adopt the next spirit of the era, Zeitgeist. That spirit is already emerging. I believe it will be a not bad era.
